Oblivion doesn’t properly reinitialize the full world when loading while playing so you can end up with corruption in save files that you may never get rid of. DO NOT load a save game while you’re playing the game. Also (this is the most annoying part) always exit to main menu (at least) before loading a save file. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t save often, on the contrary, it’s good to save (in a new save file) before opening any door that teleports you to another cell and before using fast travel. Oblivion will ask you if you want to overwrite so it’s easy to remember to never say Yes to that prompt. Essentially, try not to save over another save file, create new save files instead. In order to minimize crashes and/or savegame corruption you need to get used to a different way of saving the game in Oblivion (annoying but easy to get used to it).
